Peggy from Charlotte, NC At Mohegan Sun, Furthur Keeps Grateful Dead's Legend Alive (Concert Review)

In DSO, a Grateful Dead tribute band, Kadlecik performed the guitar and vocal parts of Jerry Garcia. Taking the same role in Furthur, his vocals were eerily reminiscent of the late singer/songwriter, and his reinterpretation of Garcia's guitar tremolos and tones sincere. Yet his performance was far less of an imitation of Garcia than a sincere exploration of Garcia's artful, improvisational approach.

"The Other One" made a great choice as an opener shortly before 8 p.m. The long, instrumental prelude gave fans a chance to spin and twirl into the arena and the band a chance to coalesce. Lesh made his prescience felt with a deeply resonating bass groove. The Grateful Dead laid the template for the improvisational segue from one song to another that many younger bands have emulated. Friday night, they moved without pause into a visceral and well-received "Alligator," a deep cut that showcased this lineup's cohesiveness.

Furthur at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, NJ on 2/27/10 performing "Next Time You See Me" Trey Anastasio Band Feb 26, 2010 ~ Charlotte, NC (Concert Review)

From the opening horn notes of “Shine” to the final notes of “First Tube,” the three hour show was relentless. His show never stuck to one style of music, exploring various genres while making them sound uniquely his. Songs like “Shine,” and “Peggy,” straight forward pop numbers, were brimming with a happy energy. The island-esque “Sweet and Dandy,” the calypso sounding “Mozambique,” the ballad-y “Sweet Dreams Melinda (“Went from Charlotte all the way to Savannah”), all sounding bright and joyous. Straight ahead rockers like “All That Almost Was,” and “Tuesday,” were Anastasio’s musical explosions, hitting loud peaks time and again. “Mr. Completely” was the more unique number of the evening, allowing Trey to conduct the band like an orchestra. Calling for key changes with a raise or lower of his finger (at four beats when I pull my fist down, thank you very much), he would call upon various members of his band to showcase their own talents.
