sewaneepurple.com: Umphrey's McGee Descends Upon Sewanee

The band arrived to Sewanee with enough time to tour our campus, spending a significant amount of time in Guerry Hall, the music department’s hub. Andrew Cotton commented that the band was delighted in the availability of Professor Miller’s “Ragtime to Radiohead” and “Ramblin’ Blues” courses. The band gave the crowd its stamp of approval following its third song, thanking us sincerely for extending such a warm welcome to play on such a momentous weekend.

Umphrey’s website noted that the night was a private event and did not include the name of the venue, but rumors started to spread as early as February on several online forums and blogs, including one Bonnaroo board. Due to Sewanee’s proximity to Bonnaroo and several large state schools, many people migrated (some as far as from Indiana, Umphrey’s original stomping ground) to see “their” band. Fans literally emerged from the woods and shoulder length grass behind the stage as early as 5 pm on Friday to sit around, share a few beers and reminisce on their past Umphrey’s experiences and their excitement for the night’s small, yet promisingly intense exhibition.

Sailboat Man was written by Anastasio with longtime writing partner Tom Marshall especially for the event, while Burn That Bridge marks the debut of Trey’s songwriting partnership with songwriter/performer Amanda Green.
