Weekly Wrap-Up with Tela [12.2.11]

Well, the turkey got us all here at OKP last week and our stuffed little selves decided to take it easy, just as the newswire did, so we didn’t have anything great to tell you about anyway. This week, however, was pretty delicious in Phish news. Our favorite redhead decided to go on a mini-winter tour. Not with TAB or Phish, kind of unfortunately, but with several different city symphony orchestras. Personally, I think this is a great opportunity to see a different side of Trey, though some of us may have heard (or even been there for) his 2009 performances with the New York Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony, largely meant to showcase his then-new concerto “Time Turns Elastic.” This time, however, Trey is doing 4 dates in 4 cities featuring full-blow Phish orchestrations and Trey originals. At each of these shows, he’ll be following the lead of Scott Dunn, Associate Conductor of LA Philharmonic’s Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

In other Phish news, New Years Eve is right around the corner! If you don’t have your tickets yet, don’t fret and expect a re-release any day now. However, if you want something a bit easier to get in to, why not try Phish Yoga? I posted a review of the last Surrender to the Flow: Phish Yoga class with yogi-phanatic Chris Calarco, and lucky for us, he’s scheduled another one during the NYE run: 12/30 at Yoga Vida on Broadway and Bond. A couple things you should know: this is an exciting, unique class and you will be sore in areas you didn’t know existed; he wouldn’t turn anyone away, but might as well pre-register and get there early- also, it’s fairly confusing, but the entrance is on Broadway; no one else is going to be in tip-top shape, considering it’s in the middle of the run, so feel free to go hung-over and tired, you’ll come out a new phan.

You could try your luck at Umph Yoga with their first DVD release in almost 5 years, but you’d be hard pressed not to jump off your mat and just start dancing. Live at Summer Camp 2011 features 2 discs, which both have a full two-set show on them, plus bonus footage; over 10 hours of unedited music for your UM pleasures, plus five brand new songs to take us into 2012.  The cover art features a bra hanging off a wired set up, and before you even watch it, you know it was a wild show. Buy the raw, two-night experience here for just $24.99.

The DVD would make a fabulous gift for the little head in your family, as would the newest musical offerings by Phil Lesh. It seems that Trey’s not the only one looking for a change of pace; the bassist has decided to do a set of winter show with his Friends in December and February. In just 17 days, Philharmonia will take place in honor of San Francisco’s Bay Area Women’s and Children’s Center. A killer holiday combo of Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jackie Greene, Grahame Lesh, Brian Lesh, Jonathan Levine, Jordan Levine and Leena Culhane will gather on behalf of the Unbroken Chain Foundation at an undisclosed location, which you can find out if you purchase a $150.00 ticket; a limited number are on sale now here. Considering the intimacy and good-doing of the event, it might be worth your time if you’re in San Fran. Can’t make it but still want to see Phil? Fear not, Phil and Friends is back! If only for a few shows (what’s with that, guys?! Can I get a tour please? ::coughcoughtreymikephil::), Phil brings John Scofield, Warren Haynes, Jackie Greene, and Joe Russo together for 3 magical Colorado nights. 1st Bank Center of Broomfield welcomes the super-group February 16, 17, and 18, so you’ve got some time, but pre-sale is already over and public on sale is... today! At 10 AM MST (yes, Mountain Standard Time... so noon EST, 9am PST, and 11am CST)!

Bobby is going back on the road too, to fulfill is postponed solo acoustic tour promises. Rescheduled for 6 dates in April-May 2012, Ratdog will travel the East Coast alone and will honor all tickets purchased for the original August run. He’ll start in Tennesee on 4/24 at the Bijou Theater in Knoxville, travel north to Charlottesville, VA for a 4/26 show, both of which are not sold out, and then do an additional show in Wilkes-Barre, PA, which you can buy tickets for starting 12/9. Back on track, Weir will land in Westbury, NY on 4/28 at the NYCB Theater, and then up in Pittsfield, MA, both of which tickets are on sale now. His last stop will be an added show in Portland, ME, at State Theater, and tickets for this final performance go on sale today at 10 AM.

Last night, I hit String Cheese Incident at Tower Theater in Upper Dirty... I mean, Darby, PA. Keep a look-out for my review and photos coming up, but in case you want to catch SCI (and I suggest you do) before the end of their Roots Run Deep tour, there’s still some chance. The next two nights, they hit NYC for sold-out shows at the way uptown United Palace Theater. Then a sold out show in Boston at the Orpheum. If you’re not trying to ticket hunt on “lot,” the show at Stage AE in Pittsburgh on 12/6 isn’t sold out yet. St. Louis, MO is, but the first of three nights in Chicago isn’t, so forget getting way down south and just hit the Aargon Ballroom 12/8 and see if you can’t score tickets to the final sold out shows over the next two nights. That's gonna be it for the Roots Run Deep tour of 2011, EOTO will play a 3-night New Years run if that’s a good alternative for you, otherwise you may be waiting another long while for a Cheese tour. At least we’ve got other phenomenal tours coming up to compensate!
